Collection: Westinghouse Micarta
Westinghouse Micarta refers to the original brand name for high-pressure laminates, a material invented by George Westinghouse around 1910. The composite, originally used for electrical insulation, is made by impregnating layers of fabric or paper with phenolic resin and curing it under intense heat and pressure. Over the decades, its durability and versatility have made it a popular material for items like knife handles and other industrial and decorative parts.
What is vintage Westinghouse Micarta?
Vintage Westinghouse Micarta refers to material produced by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation from the early 1900s until the company's Micarta division was sold in the mid-1990s. The original recipe used phenolic resin, which darkens over time to create a unique patina.
Vintage stock is highly sought after by knife makers and artisans because of its unique look and high quality. After the Westinghouse Micarta division was sold, the trademark and manufacturing processes changed hands multiple times, but the original formula is no longer made.
